Hospital Artwork and Murals

Collaborating with patients, artists, staff, volunteers and the greater community at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton to create large scale artwork for clinical hospital spaces. Each mural and artwork created is unique to it’s location and the therapeutic goals of the program who commission the project.

The CONNECT mural is a site specific collaboration through Mood Disorders Art Therapy and many of the adult programs that CONNECT serves throughout St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. The CONNECT team strives to make access to mental health and additions programs simple and supportive while they connect people to the right care, in the right place, at the right time. The artwork displayed in this mural was created by people receiving care throughout the hospital, using art and creativity to bring together our larger hospital community, creating a connection between patients, staff and across programs.

The mural Compassionate Care, commissioned for the St Joe’s staff interview, meeting and seminar room on level 1 West 5th campus, is a vibrant tribute to the core values that shape the healthcare profession. Bursting with vivid flowers in various stages of bloom, the piece symbolizes growth—not only in skill and understanding but also in the personal and collective journey of those who serve. Each element of the mural reflects a deep sense of responsibility, with careful attention to detail that honors the quiet strength required in caregiving roles. The design emphasizes dignity through its gentle yet colourful color palette and uplifting composition, inviting viewers to reflect on the humanity at the heart of healthcare. With each brushstroke, Compassionate Care serves as a reminder that true healthcare is rooted in compassion, respect, and an unwavering commitment to serve others.

Book Nook Post It Note Mural To Thine Own Self, Be True

A partnership with West 5th’s Book Nook to transform the hospital patient library. Participants of a weekly Art Therapy group held at the Book Nook, crafted vibrant paper collages for display on the tops of the bookcases. The accompanying Book Nook mural serves as an ongoing accessible and interactive process, inviting patients to sit, create, and showcase their artwork through the making and display of a post-it note artwork which can be added to the mural. This collaboration would not have been possible without the support of patients, staff and the Book Nook volunteers. Youth Wellness Mural

Supporting the creation of an immersive therapy space at the SJHH Youth Wellness Centre. Studio Ghibli films are deeply connected to the experience of youth, often exploring themes of growing up, facing challenges, and finding wonder in the world. They frequently feature young protagonists who embark on journeys of self-discovery, navigate challenging situations, and maintain a sense of optimism and hope. The Youth Wellness Centre provides a safe, accessible environment for young people age 17 to 25 to receive mental health care by self-referral. Peer Support Mural

Patient & Family Collaborative Support Services teamed up with the Mood Disorders Art Therapy Program for the creation of a large-scale mural created at St. Joe’s West 5th Campus. This mural explores colour, symbols, and self-expression to support recovery-oriented care and peer support values. These values support the philosophy and practices of psychosocial rehabilitation in providing peer support to individuals experiencing mental illness and/or addiction and their families.
